Pedestrian bridges<br>Bond Falls State Park
Pedestrian Bridges at
Bond Falls State Park
East of Paulding, Michigan
The primary objective of this project is to provide barrier free viewing opportunities at the base of the picturesque Bond Falls located in Michigan’s western Upper Peninsula. Previously, two pole stringer bridges provided access across the Ontonagon River at the base of the falls, where its flow is divided by an island. The new replacement bridges will provide increased load carrying capacity and the increased bridge width will allow viewing opportunities to personnel with varied levels of mobility.

The intent of the design was to have the new bridges aesthetically blend into the rustic character of the site. The abutments are constructed of grouted masonry walls supported on cast-in-place concrete footings. The exposed surfaces of the abutment walls are covered with cultured stone to mimic the character of the natural river rock present at the site. Led by Jim Rintala, P.E., NDG is providing both design and construction engineering to the project, which will be completed in late Spring, 2003.

North Down River Road
North Down River Road
Grayling, MI

This project included completion of design and construction engineering services, utilizing a team led by Jason Fate, E.I.T. The design of North Down River Road included 1.05 miles of road reconstruction, storm sewer improvements, concrete curb, and sidewalk. NDG worked closely with Crawford County Road Commission and the City of Grayling to complete the design. The reconstruction of North Down River Road was completed in the summer of 2002, at a cost of $497,000. North Down River Road was constructed under a detour, which required careful planning to accommodate the Hospital and high volumes of traffic. This was accomplished by planning between the engineer, contractor, county, and city. Future sidewalk, storm sewer, sanitary sewer, and water main expansions had to be considered in the design and during construction of North Down River Road.

Crooked Tree Arts Center
Crooked Tree Arts Center
Petoskey, MI

The Crooked Tree Arts Center is currently undergoing an approximately $3.7 million renovation. NDG has been involved in this project since 1999. During the design phase NDG worked with Quinn Evans Architects from Ann Arbor, MI. NDG’s various roles during the design phase included, analysis of the existing structure, design of the repairs and renovations to the existing structure, and design of the new structure for the addition. The existing structure is more than a hundred years old and posed an interesting and exciting challenge.

The Christman Company from Petoskey is the construction manager for the project. During construction NDG is working in conjunction with both Quinn Evans Architects and The Christman Company. NDG’s responsibilities include reviewing shop drawings and answering questions as they develop during construction. Led by project manager Amanda Denise, P.E., NDG has also performed and will continue to perform construction inspections and material testing. The project began in August, 2002 and its completion is scheduled for early fall of 2003. NDG is thankful to have the opportunity to be involved in such a unique project in our local community and look forward to its successful completion.

Spring Lake Park Boardwalk
Spring Lake Park Boardwalk
Petoskey, MI

Completion of design, grant administration, and construction quality control for this new roadside park on M-119 near Petoskey, Michigan. NDG was selected to perform this work above other firms because of our extensive state grant funded project experience and full in-house capabilities. Major funding for the $310,000 project was from MDOT’s Transportation Enhancement Program. Construction of the original park was completed in 1997, within 1% of NDG’s estimate. Utility systems include sewer lift station and force main, storm drainage, extensive site lighting, and all plumbing, mechanical and electrical systems for a restroom building and pavilion building. NDG designed all systems and structures in-house, led by Howard Haselschwardt, P.E. and Lucas Porath, P.E. In 2001 and 2002 NDG designed a $350,000 wetland boardwalk and outlet control structure for the lake, at this same park. The outlet control structure is designed to maintain a safe water level in the lake, while preventing fish migration out of the lake, and beavers from plugging the outlet. The project was completed under NDG’s original budget estimate, and on-time.
